Extract text from PDF without uploading

Get the text of a PDF in reading order, to copy or save as a .txt file, right in your browser.

How it works

The text is read from the PDF on your device, in reading order: two-column pages are reordered, repeated headers and footers left out, and tables become tab-separated rows. Scanned pages can be read with on-device OCR.

Why use this tool?

No uploads, accounts, ads, or tracking. The processing engine runs locally on your device.

Frequently asked questions

What do I get?

A .txt file with the text in reading order: paragraphs as lines, tables as tab-separated rows, links with their address. The same text is also available as Markdown, with headings, lists and images.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

Yes. Pages without a text layer can be read with OCR on your device. The first time downloads a few MB of recognition data; check the result against the PDF, since OCR can make mistakes.

Is the layout kept exactly?

No. Markdown keeps structure (headings, lists, links, tables), not fonts or positions. Compare with the PDF page by page to check.

Are files uploaded?

No. Files stay in this browser tab and are never sent to a server, whichever tool you use.

Is it free? Are there limits?

Free, with no account, watermark or daily limit. The only limit is your device's memory for very large files.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes. Every tool runs in modern mobile browsers. Very large PDFs can exceed a phone's memory; a computer handles those better.

Does it work offline?

Yes, for the tools you have used once online: the site keeps their files in the browser, so they then run without a connection.
